Basic DBS Check Standard DBS Check Enhanced DBS Check

Basic DBS Checks can be applied for by both individuals and companies.

With the applicant’s consent, employers are able to check for any unspent convictions on an applicant’s criminal record in order to make an informed hiring decision and prevent the hiring of unsuitable candidates working with vulnerable groups.

All applications for a Basic DBS Check search for any details of convictions considered “unspent” under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.

A Standard DBS Check is an in-depth background check carried out by employers on behalf of applicants to verify if a candidate is suitable to hire for work in a specific industry.

It will show details of all cautions, warnings, reprimands, as well as all spent and unspent convictions held on an individual’s criminal record. You will be eligible to apply for Standard Criminal Record check for your employees if they’re working in certain industries.

A Standard DBS Check is only available to organisations to access on behalf of their employees; an individual cannot apply for a check on themselves.

Enhanced DBS Checks are available for organisations to make a suitability decision on their applicants.

An Enhanced DBS Check shows full details of a criminal record, including cautions, warnings, reprimands, spent and unspent convictions. It can also search the children and adults ‘barred lists’ to see if the applicant is prohibited from working with these groups. Local police can add any relevant information about the applicant.

Usually, employees carrying out roles involving regular contact with vulnerable groups qualify for an Enhanced Check.
