Top tips for staying productive whilst working from home

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you will have noticed many people posting about how they are now working from home, as well as those who work from home regularly sharing their tips on how to stay productive.

Going from seeing your colleagues every day to social distancing can be a real challenge. We’ve collated our favourite ideas and responses to help you along the way:

Separate your work space from your leisure space

No doubt you’ve made your desk your own at work, so why not do the same at home? Even if you don’t have the luxury of having an office in your house it’s important you don’t just stay in bed every day.

Choose a light room and create a makeshift desk if you need to, think breakfast bars, dining tables and even coffee tables. Psychologically, separating your new workspace from where you hang out for leisure will help you create a divide between work and family life.

Bringing some flowers or plants wouldn’t go amiss either!

Over-communicate with your colleagues

Don’t underestimate how hard it is to keep in constant contact with your team. When you’re in the office, all you need to do is lean over the desk to ask a question or nip across to someone to find out if a task has been done. This isn’t the same when you’re working from home.

Utilise the amazing technology that is available out there such as Microsoft Teams and Slack to take part in morning meetings, to find out what everyone is up to and what their plans are for the day. If you’re a manager, make sure you’re constantly in contact with your team so they feel supported and focused.

Working remotely can also get lonely, the power of asking someone what they are having for lunch goes a long way! We’re human after all.

Consider your outfit

Does your company have a dress code? Maybe they don’t and you’re used to working in casual clothes. Either way, don’t stay in your pyjamas.

Now we’re not saying you should be getting suited and booted to sit at home, but putting on some form of work wear can help you get into the right mentality. Different approaches work for different people so make sure you choose something which makes you feel like you are at work.

Keep moving

If you’re self-isolating, it’s so important to keep your energy levels up and exercise when you can. The same goes for those that can get outside – research suggests that short bouts of activity throughout the day can boost your overall wellbeing, whether that’s running up and down the stairs, doing squats or a few lunges every now and again.

Get some fresh air

Even though the reason many of us are working from home is to prevent the spread, you can still take the opportunity to keep yourself fit and healthy. If you can, go for a 30 minute walk on your lunch break (whilst maintaining a safe distance from the public) or first thing in the morning to keep you feeling energised. If you are limited to staying indoors, maybe try a home workout on Youtube with the windows open!
