Tips for younger jobseekers

Younger or more inexperienced job seekers often find selling themselves to potential employers difficult.

From writing a good covering letter to making a good impression at interview, job seekers need to make the most of every opportunity to present their best skills.

 

  • Look carefully at the job title and description. Read the job ad carefully as it will give clues to the company’s ideal candidate. Then review your own experience and match it to this description. Think of examples from your work experience and education history where you’ve used the required skills.

 

  • Experience. Even if you’re just starting out, you have a story to tell! Think of all your summer jobs, school and university projects, extra-curricular activities, voluntary work and hobbies – these can all contribute to your sales pitch. If they match the job criteria, they count!

 

  • Put a professional spin on your outside activities. If you’ve helped arrange an event, for example, this could demonstrate skills such as budget planning, supplier management and delivering to deadlines.

 

  • Know your stuff! A confident interview leaves a great impression. Practice your answers out loud and learn how to emphasise your skills (excellent organisation, negotiation skills, etc) in the best possible way.

 

Some of the common skills and personal qualities employers look for are:

 

  • Communication Skills. Whether written, verbal or listening, these skills are desirable. Examples could include giving speeches, presentations, verbal or written reports, blogs, newsletter contributions, school dramatic groups, magazine contributions.

 

  • Project Management. Showing you can plan, organise and coordinate a range of tasks to achieve a goal. Examples could include organising events, coursework, working to deadlines, budgeting, coordinating groups of people.

 

  • Team Work. Times when you’ve had to work with others or contribute to a group to succeed. Sports teams, academic societies, group projects, are all good examples.

 

  • Leadership. In addition to supervising or team management roles, have others had to look to you for expertise and guidance? Mentoring, team captaincy, camp counselling, for example.

 

  • Commercial Awareness. These could include summer jobs, internships and work experience which demonstrate your knowledge of how business works.
