Businesses are a real mix of diverse cultures, generations and personalities which all approach work in different ways. They have a combination of veterans, baby boomers, Generation X, Generation Y and Millennials all contributing to creating an innovative mix.Understanding these differences and catering for them will not only help retain staff, but assist them in working together to achieve the ultimate objectives of the business.

With such a combination of people all trying to achieve their targets, businesses must have a workplace philosophy for everyone to work together.

Below are 5 tips for managing a diverse workforce:

1. Nurture Talent

Recognise the characteristics of each group of employees so that you can provide them with exciting opportunities to expand their experience and use their skills. Offer feedback as a constructive way of developing specific skill sets and discovering areas for growth.

2. Facilitate Career Progression

Some groups of employees are motivated by a craving to progress at rapid speed. They show a passion, are hard workers and have high expectations for personal growth. At the same time, some groups may be sensitive about promotions and growth, and place more value in compensation and recognition.

3. Assess to Progress

Businesses need to set goals and measure performance based on personalised parameters. To ensure personal growth and recognition, continuous assessments are best practice. Younger employees tend to be very competitive and are seeking to “stamp their mark” on the business in order to stand out.

4. Diversity fuels creativity

By utilising the talent pool in different cultures, businesses can maximise productivity and creativity. They have better access to the global possibilities.

5. Embrace technology

Some generations are more tech savvy than others, and the younger generation in particular mould their personal lives around communication tools, networking and the latest technology. Businesses therefore need to be technologically and digitally progressive.

It is essential for businesses to understand how changes impact the characteristics of each group of employees and therefore respond to ensure a win-win situation for the business and its staff.

While it is essential to adapt and “move with the times”, the older generation should not be forgotten. They are a key part of the workforce and need recognition. Businesses need to make sure there are options available for each generation.
