Job Interview: Body Language

Body Language Do’s and Don’ts

Did you know that Non-verbal communication accounts for over 90% of the message you are sending out in your job interview!

Here are a few pointers to help you give a great impression…

Do:

  • Handshake – Give each interviewer a firm handshake at the beginning and end of the interview.
  • Posture – Sit up straight and lean slightly forward in your chair. Keep a relaxed but alert posture and a friendly expression, this helps demonstrate curiosity and enthusiasm.
  • Smile – You need to try and build a rapport with the interviewer and the best way of doing this is with a smile
  • Show interest – Show your enthusiasm by keeping an interested expression. Nod and make positive gestures. Your physical gestures should be open and expressive
  • Personal space – Keep a comfortable amount of personal space between you and the interviewer.
  • Eye contact – Maintain good eye contact, eye contact is important in making you look sincere and truthful. If there is more than one interviewer, look at the person asking the question when you reply but remember to glance at the other interviewers from time to time.

Don’t:

  • Movements – Try and limit your hand and arm movements as this can be off-putting to some interviewers.
  • Perfume – Don’t use too much cologne or perfume; strong aromas can arouse allergies.
  • Crossing Arms – Crossing your arms can be interpreted as defensive
  • Moving feet – Beware of moving your feet up and down repeatedly in a nervous manner – it can be seen as a sign of boredom
  • Touching your face – Resist the urge to touch your face or play with your hair, this suggests you’re lying.

Giving the right impression at interview really could make the difference to you getting the job you want!

Good Luck!!
