10 Great Things to Ask at an Exit Interview

“Ignorance is bliss?” Not necessarily! When it comes to employees leaving your business it’s important to understand their motivations for their departure.

What we don’t know can hurt us and our company, so it’s imperative that we ask some questions when it comes to people exiting our business.

When employees provide honest feedback, we can learn from it and most importantly, improve!

To make the most of exit interviews, try utilising these ten questions:

  1. How did the job here match your expectations?
  2. How well do you feel that your induction and training by the business helped you in your role?
  3. If you were running this business what would you do differently and why?
  4. If you had a friend looking for a job, would you recommend us? Why or why not?
  5. What was your best or worst moment/experience in your job?
  6. How comfortable were you discussing work problems with your manager?
  7. Did you have the tools and resources that you needed to do your job effectively?
  8. Why did you initially begin looking for a new job and what led to you accepting the role?
  9. What is your experience of employee morale and motivation across the company and how well do you think our values are embraced?
  10. Do you have any recommendations regarding benefits and other rewards offered by the business?

Once you have finished with all your questions it may be best to end with an open/general question, something like ‘are there any unresolved issues or additional comments you wish to make?’ to give your employee the chance to express any further qualms they may have.
