As part of our ongoing work with the local education network, Cummins Mellor kicked off the New Year with an employability workshop for students at Blackburn College.
The group of students were all in their final year of study and having decided not to pursue further qualifications at University, the group were keen to pick up some advice on where to start with their careers.
The session focussed on employability skills including the value of work experience, CV creation and interview advice. The group had the opportunity to share their experiences with each other and talk through their next steps.
Commenting on the event, Director Helen Jackson said “I was so impressed by how engaged the students were in the session and the thought they’d already put in to their future careers. The group seemed to really take on-board the advice regarding interviewing techniques and have all gone away with some actions that they can take with regards their CV’s and seeking some work experience”.
Nick Hall, Employer Engagement Manager at Blackburn College also said; ‘The session was part of an employability pilot that Blackburn College are undertaking. That explores a targeted approach to equip learners who have not chosen to go to University with knowledge and skills to be able to access their chosen field of work.
The session facilitated by Cummins Mellor was excellent with all students giving excellent feedback and commenting on how informative the session had been.
This is a pilot and it is hoped that going forward an employability programme involving employers will be rolled out across College”.
