3 Crucial Steps To Finding Your Dream Career – Not Just a Job

1 year ago

One thing is clear, the job market has changed and you may have heard the phrase ‘the candidate is king’ which tells us of the recent shift in power, from the employer to the job seeker. It is now the candidate’s decision and making the right choice of employer is crucial to transforming your future!

Here are a few of stats to consider:ayesha

  • Employment is at its highest rate since records began in 1971
  • The most recent employment rate was a whopping 74.6%*
  • There have been 3.7 million more jobs created in the private sector since 2010**
  • Half of employers anticipate a shortage of candidates to fill permanent jobs**
  • A quarter of employers expect to take on more permanent staff in the next three months**

All things considered, top talent is becoming harder to find – you are now a scarce commodity and that means you can be choosy!

I have met with several candidates over the past few weeks and it struck me that there has been a common theme in the reasons for leaving their current role. It is not necessarily because they have fallen out of love with the job they are doing, but because they no longer feel that the business can offer the career they’re looking for.

Don’t get me wrong, I understand that people can get stagnant in their roles and become inquisitive about what is out there – but the questions is – did they really get to understand what the role would do for their future from the outset?

Here’re my top 3 tips for finding a role that will drive your career forward;

  1. Ask the right questions:

You’re in the driving seat, you’re the person in control of your own destiny and it’s you that needs to ascertain what a company is going to do for your future. The only way you’re going to find this out is by asking some questions. Here are The 10 questions you should ALWAYS ask before accepting a job to ensure that new employer is going to help transform your future. Interviews aren’t an interrogation, they are a 2 way process, so don’t be afraid to ask what’s in it for you.

  1. Believe in what they do:

In order to truly buy into a company and find a long term career with them, you should be passionate about what they do. Completing thorough background research on a company before applying for a role can really help you understand whether they’re the right type of business for you. Work with a business that has a product or service that you can truly believe in – this can really help inspire and drive you to succeed in your career.

  1. Be aligned with their values, mission and purpose:

Getting a new job isn’t simply about matching your skills to a job spec, it’s about identifying a match in culture, personal development requirements and ambition. Understanding what a business stands for and being aligned to that is key to progressing your career. What the company can offer you on top of your day-to-day role is integral to the transformation of both your future and that of the business which you are joining. Find out what the company stands for and what their values are and align yourself with those same values and shared goals.

Remembering these 3 steps before you make your next career move can really make all the difference. Stop and analyse exactly what it is that you want from a role and your career as a whole, before deciding if this is the right company for you and making that dreaded leap of faith. Remember, you’re in the driving seat!
