I love a good success story, especially when the outcome changes someone’s life. There’s no better feeling than knowing you have made a positive difference to an individual’s future.
I truly believe that a little bit of hard work goes a long way, and that the right talent and attitude can change not only the candidate’s life, but also transform the future of their new employer. I’d like to share the story of Jessica, a young woman looking to return to the office environment after a career break. The trouble was, the majority of employers were looking for recent experience in Administration, which was something she just didn’t have.
Right from my initial interview with her I could sense that there was a spark in her personality and a strong desire to succeed and felt that if she could just gain a little recent experience she could land herself a brilliant opportunity. Following the interview, I advised Jessica to seek out some voluntary administration work to boost her experience and help prepare her to re-enter an office environment. I assured Jessica with this experience under her belt, we’d be in a much stronger position to find her an opportunity. Although we couldn’t place her immediately, it was certainly a step in the right direction.
A few weeks later, I received a very excited phone call. “Maria! I’ve done it! I went out to get volunteer experience, and they decided to pay me!” Jessica had taken my advice, gone out, and obtained a volunteering role! I was over the moon!
Shortly after registering with Cummins Mellor, an administration role came available which matched exactly what Jessica was looking for, we put her forward for the opportunity and she was successful in her interview. The client recognised her ambition and determination and ‘can do’ attitude instantly – it was a perfect match.
Now, a few months on, Jessica loves her job, she has proven to be an asset to the business, amongst other things she has revolutionised their filing system and made herself right at home. Not only has her life been transformed, but she is playing her part in transforming the future of the business she is working in. All made possible because she took on board our advice and went out of her way to build on her experiences.
“Thanks to Maria for her fab help and advice. After taking a career break I went to see her and she advised me that they loved my CV but I needed more recent experience, I appreciated their honesty and got myself a temporary position.
After lots of encouragement and backing from Maria I have now got a brilliant permanent job in an office where I have been made to feel one of the family.
Maria bent over backwards for me and built my confidence up so much. I can’t thank her enough.”
Of course, this wouldn’t be a good story without a moral lesson, and there’s a few that can be taken from this; try your best, go the extra mile, the list goes on.
It just shows that by going the extra mile, it’s possible to transform an individual’s future.
