What Makes A Good Recruiter?

I believe that it takes a special and unique kind of person to succeed in recruitment. Words like persistence, ambition, drive and passion all spring to mind. But how do you know if you’ve got what it takes?  ayesha

Start by asking yourself the following questions:

  • Are you a confident communicator who loves building relationships?

Skills like listening, persuasion and rapport building are key to the role of a recruiter. Recruitment isn’t about finding any old candidate off the street and getting them a job; it’s about matching the right candidate to the right company. Recruitment decisions are largely guided by the questions you ask and the answers you receive both from candidates and clients. Excellent communication is a MUST!

  • Are you a self-starter?

Whilst good training is key, no-one’s going to stand over your shoulder or hold your hand whilst you get the job done. It’s up to you to pick-up that phone, set up appointments and resource the best candidates – you have to want to make things happen!

  • Would you invest in Success?

To be successful, you don’t have to be some kind of megalomaniac or be hell-bent on success. You do however have to care very deeply about professional advancement and peoples’ careers. You have to be invested in candidates and companies, which means caring about job satisfaction, personal issues, and career advancement. This translates into your own work as well – recruiters have to always be expanding their knowledge base and connections. Successful recruiters have to believe that jobs, work and professional success matter deeply to people’s lives and they must believe in the power of continuous improvement.

  • Are you driven by results?

You will get out of recruiting only what you put into it. If you get genuinely excited about the quality and quantity of your work this will most certainly impact on your productivity. Whilst benefitting from training, coaching and development, results are driven by your own personal actions. Keeping your eyes on the target, taking motivation from a challenge and being driven by passion is crucial!
