8/10 Employers Planning to Hire More Staff in Next 3 Months

Figures from the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC)’s JobsOutlook survey of employers has revealed positive information regarding future hiring trends for temporary and permanent staff.

Employers needing new staff to meet increased demand has risen from a quarter at the turn of the year to over a third.

When asked about their plans for permanent and temporary staff in the short and medium term;

  • 80% employers plan to increase permanent hiring in the next three months
  • 79% employers plan to increase their permanent hiring in the next 4-12 months
  • 50% employers plan to increase use of agency workers in the next three months
  • 43% employers plan to increase their use of agency workers in the next 4-12 months

The same positive attitude seems to be shared in the North West as employment figures have risen to 69.8% from 69.3% in the first quarter of 2013, although these figures are not yet on a par with the national average of 72.7%.

The North West has also seen a drop in unemployment from 8% in the first quarter of last year to 7.7% in the first quarter of 2014. However this is still considerably higher than the national average of 6.8%.

REC CEO Kevin Green said: “The economic recovery is having a real impact on the jobs market as these are the best results we have seen since this survey began in 2009. The labour market is becoming more candidate led and it is vital that businesses look at their hiring processes to ensure that they are fit for purpose and will attract the candidates they are looking to hire.”

Concern over skills and talent shortages of candidates have been highlighted by employers in the latest report;

  • 20% employers predicting a problem finding people to fill technical and engineering roles in the next three months
  • 25% employers predicting significant candidate shortages in the next 12 months

In order to combat these issues Cummins Mellor Recruitment will be holding a series of Recruitment Rallies for candidates and employers in East Lancashire focusing on interviewing techniques, CV writing skills and advice on how to become an employer of choice to ensure businesses are doing everything they can to attract skilled candidates.
