5 Great Interview Questions To Get The Most Out Of Candidates

4 years ago

19% of employees are planning to leave their jobs this year to look for pastures new. Couple this with the job market picking up and the odds are you’re carrying out a few interviews at the moment or will be doing in the near future.

When carrying out so many interviews, you could be forgiven for letting your technique slip and become a little stale and boring. But the truth is, the best candidates want to be challenged, after all, they’re assessing you as much as you’re assessing them. What does a lacklustre interview say about your company and its ambitions?

With that in mind, it’s a good idea to have some interesting and thought provoking questions up your sleeve that really will separate the elite from the average.

Here are 5 great questions to add to your interviewing inventory;

1. Why are you here?

This question is best asked right at the beginning of the interview as soon as the candidate sits down. This question should hopefully provoke enthusiasm and passion amongst the candidate. This is a great way to gauge how passionate the interviewee is about the role or if they’re simply just looking for any old job.

2. If you could do anything, what would be your ideal job?

This will indicate whether the individual is matched to the role, it should also highlight their passions and strengths. The answers are revealing and can tell you something about the candidate you might never have discovered.

3. Who do you most admire and why?

This reveals a lot about the candidate’s aspirations and how well they are matched to your organisation. Don’t be put off if they answer with a person you’re not particularly keen on, they might have a really good reason! Think about the characteristics that person possesses and if they match the culture of your company.

4. What is your passion?

You need absolute commitment from your employees and their passion is key to your company’s success. Their passion and enthusiasm should be very apparent when answering this question.

5. Describe and environment in which you would not thrive

You can learn a great deal about the candidate’s personality from this question and their answer should tell you all you need to know about whether they will fit into your organisation.

So if you’re interviewing technique needs a little variety injecting into it, try asking some of these questions in your next interview and see how much more you find out!
