How to Deal with Salary Demands when Recruiting

Discussing salaries at interviews can be a difficult topic for both the client and the candidate.  What would you do if you found a suitable candidate and they wanted a higher salary than you were offering?

Always be clear about the salary being offered – this topic is best brought up early in the recruitment process to ensure time is not wasted and the candidate and client know the score right from the start. Ensure the job description contains a salary range for negotiations within.

What do you do if you find the perfect candidate and they’re asking for more money?  See below for some tips and advice on what to do in this scenario….

Research
Before advertising you should check the following:

  • Salary levels for similar positions – bearing in mind location
  • Benefits and incentives you could offer a potential candidate
  • Can you offer career progression and training and education

Value of the Job
You should try to remember:

  • Paying a lower salary is not always the best – you get what you pay for
  • Higher salaries can command better performance
  • Loyalty to your company and less temptation to leave for higher salary
  • Positive impact on company

Honesty and Transparency
Always be honest with the candidate but have an upper limit in mind should the need arise.  Ask the candidate about what salary they are expecting – this may be higher but they too probably have room for negotiation.

Negotiations
When you find the suitable candidate but they want more remember the following:

  • Will they bring what is required to the role and if so, more?
  • Are they worth the money
  • Can you offer more benefits/incentives as compensation
  • Will the company’s budget allow for a bit more
  • Can both parties make a compromise?

Find a salary that suits the candidate and yourself alike.  You don’t want to risk losing the right candidate to a competitor if a better opportunity arises they may not feel obliged to be loyal.

The key to a successful candidate/client relationship is to discuss salary and expectations right at the very start of the recruitment process this will prevent time wasting and ensure the most suitable candidates come forward.
